From bob at bobcatos.com Sat Jan 2 18:18:43 2010 From: bob at bobcatos.com (Bob McClure Jr) Date: Sat Jan 2 18:19:03 2010 Subject: [As-users] Upgrade to v2.2.9 problems Message-ID: <20100103001843.GA17318@bobcat.bobcatos.com> Well, the holidays always seem to be the time to upgrade things, and so my favorite WM is one of them. I've been happy with v2.2.8, but I like new things, though I know that things sometimes break. First, the environment: Athlon 64 at 2.2 GHz 2GB RAM Fedora 12 for the x86_64 F11 and F12 gave me AfterStep as a selection in the login GUI with AS v2.2.8. Then I built AS v2.2.9 without any special options, installed it, and now the AS selection is not there, though many others are. I thought I used to know how to get third-party WMs wired into the selector, but I cannot find it now. I even tried echo "exec afterstep" > .xinitrc and that doesn't work either. Why in the hell hasn't RH/Fedora (or anyone else, for that matter) adequately (so I can easily find it) documented how to add third-party WMs to the login WM selector? Is this an Xorg or Gnome fsck-up or what? Ah, I feel better now. Okay, can someone give me a clue how I can either - Get AS back into the login GUI selector menu, or - Brute-force AS into operation? Cheers, -- Bob McClure, Jr. Bobcat Open Systems, Inc. bob@bobcatos.com http://www.bobcatos.com The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. I'd check out those as well as the SRPMS. Under F12 with gdm, I get AS as a WM option, at least with the AfterStep.org RPMS. I'd give those and the AS Fedora repo a look: http://www.afterstep.org/download.php?show=RPMS Please post if there are additional issues. 2.2.9 needed some significant patching from cvs; hopefully the development team can get a newer release soon. I can put only as much as 4 apps in sys tray, after that peksystray crashes also :( Is there a way to put more apps there? And one more thing how can I put apps (like NetworkMannager) in systray at startup without running it manually? I'm running AfterStep 2.2.9 on Fedora 12, from yum repo. Have you looked at trayer or stalonetray? Both are in the repo and are much more flexible than the the fixed-size Wharf applets. I've used trayer for a while and consider it "solid". Have you installed "alltray"? It allows you to add any application to the systray. I have it set as a Wharf button; I click the alltray Wharf button, then the application I want in the tray, and it goes right in. This does sound like the cause of the slowness. The conversion of the images seems unnecessary when the majority of them won't change very often. Maybe afterstep could save the converted images and then on subsequent restarts just compare the timestamps of the source and converted files? Just a suggestion. > I seem to remember a command to disable image previews, but can't > remember the syntax. "Sometimes I remember to forget". I've just found this. In your look file you can set MenuMiniPixmaps 0 to disable them. Setting it to 1 will bring them back.
