From jkrebs at tconl.com Mon Jun 2 08:36:39 2008 From: jkrebs at tconl.com (Jeff Krebs) Date: Mon Jun 2 08:37:09 2008 Subject: [As-users] Fedora 9 RPMS - New Additions to Repo Message-ID: <20080602133639.GA31876@localhost.localdomain> The AfterStep Applets Repository has FINALLY been updated for Fedora 9. Instructions for YUM installation can be found at: http://www.afterstep.org/download.php?show=RPMS As usual, these Fedora 9 RPMS can be found at: ftp://ftp.afterstep.org/stable/rpms/RPMS/fc/9/i386 Source RPMS that should work with most versions of Fedora (Core 3+) and other distros can be found at: ftp://ftp.afterstep.org/stable/rpms/SRPMS Feedback via the AfterStep User Mailing List is appreciated. Fedora 9 AppletRPMS Notes: Fedora 9 - Overall -------- Wow! The install went smoothly. Things appear to be must faster than under Fedora 8. OpenOffice is much more responsive, and FireFox 3 (Beta 5) is a real scorcher. I'm really pleased with firefox's compatibility with web pages; many pages that were broken or functioned in odd ways work well now. My only gripe is the lack of FireFox themes, but I can live without them for now. Other than the rxvt-unicode issue listed below, I'm very pleased to have moved from Fedora 8 to version 9. rxvt-unicode and aterm -------- Both rxvt-unicode-9.02 and aterm-1.0.1 fail to build, giving the error "sys/stropts.h: No such file or directory". I'm guessing this is a gcc issue of sorts. Both terms are posted on bugzilla.redhat.com as "failing to build from source". The current rxvt-unicode from Fedora 9 installs, but will not run (with AfterStep, at least). I tried installing the Fedora 8 version from the AppletRPM repo to no avail. Xterm installs and works, but it's still... xterm. Mrxvt (from Fedora) installs and runs, but transparency doesn't work with AfterStep. If anyone has any ideas on why these packages won't currently build, your help would be greatly appreciated. libical, parcellite, and stalonetray -------- All three applications are now included in Fedora's own Release 8 and 9 repositories. I will leave these out of the Applets-RPMS repo unless this changes. Temperature.app -------- No clue what's up with this, but it fails to build. It's probably a gcc issue (newer versions seem less forgiving on older apps). This is a nice, read-able, and simple Applet. Too bad. wmalms, wmsensormon, wmtemp -------- Starting with Fedora 9, lm_sensors is defaulted to the new 3.0.0 series. This latest version relies solely on the drivers included with the 2.6.x Linux kernel. This also means, quoting from the www.lm-sensors.org website, "Most third party monitoring applications do not yet work with the library in this package". So true. The result of this change is that the wmalms, wmsensormon, and wmtemp Applets fail to build, complaining about not finding "sensors/chips.h"; "chips.h" was included included in lm_sensors < 3.0.0, but not in the current versions. The good news is that wmcpum.app still works splendidly, and is a fine Applet. It just needs to be pointed at /sys/bus/platform/devices/ rather than /sys/bus/i2c/devices/ (at least on my system). For those desiring to use wmalms, wmsensormon, or wmtemp, you will need to install an older version of lm_sensors and rebuild the SRPMS provided at ftp://ftp.afterstep.org/stable/rpms/SRPMS/ . For Fedora 9, ATRPMS provides the "legacy" lm_sensors at http://atrpms.net/dist/f9/lm_sensors/ . About the AfterStep Applets Repository: -------- This repository contains AfterStep, aterm, rxvt-unicode and over 60 Wharf/Dockapps for use with AfterStep and WindowMaker. In addition, there are some added utilities that work well under AfterStep. Fedora versions 9 and later do not include sys/stropts.h in the glibc-headers package. I've patched the rxvt-unicode config.h.in file to disable "HAVE_ISASTREAM". Rxvt-unicode builds nicely. Aterm suffers from the same issue, but will need more work. I have added rxvt-unicode to the AppletRPMS Fedora 9 repo. I see SMP... is it an SMP machine? Are you running an AMD64? Have you looked at the SUSE .spec file for AfterStep to see the general build steps taken? The Fedora .spec file is at: http://cvs.berlios.de/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/appletrpms/afterapps-specs/SPECS/AfterStep.spec?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/plain The biggest difference that I would expect between SUSE and Fedora would be the gdm/xdm setup locations. The Fedora .src.rpms are at: ftp://ftp.afterstep.org/stable/rpms/SRPMS/ You can always take a look at that and tweak to your heart's content too. If you have a Look you like and want to tweak the fonts, copy the Look file from /usr/share/afterstep/looks to ~/.afterstep/looks/, renaming the file to something unique. Your fonts are in that file.
